Ballet

Sophie started dancing when she was fourteen at Ballet Etudes School of Dance in Gilbert, Arizona. She danced in their pre-professional company for four years and has attended summer intensives at BYU, Ballet West Academy, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, American Ballet Theater NYC, and Boston Ballet School. In July 2016 Sophie was invited to train at the Boston Ballet School (BBS) year round in their pre-professional program. While at BBS, she had the opportunity to perform in Balanchine’s Walpurgisnacht at the Boston Opera House in the school’s annual Next Generation performance. Sophie is now a senior at BYU majoring in Exercise and Wellness and minoring in ballet.

In her past three years on BYU’s Theatre Ballet Company, Sophie has performed in esteemed works by George Balanchine, including Valse Fantasie and the principal role in Walpurgisnaght. She has also enjoyed performing in pieces by Gerald Arpino, including Viva Vivaldi and the principal role in Reflections. One of her favorite classical ballets that she has performed in was BYU’s Swan Lake, and her favorite classical role that she has performed was Aurora in BYU’s Sleeping Beauty

Sophie considers ballet to be one of the greatest blessings in her life, and she hopes to share the invaluable lessons and joy that come through ballet with each of her students. She recognizes that along with technique, musicality, and artistry, ballet teaches discipline, humility, and grit. It is her goal to help students develop those characteristics through ballet.
