Why invest in a strong early childhood dance education for your child

Starting your child out with a strong foundation in dance education has many advantages. Our program for 3-7 year-olds builds an incredible foundation in dance etiquette, body awareness, technique and musicality. Students are taught to master concepts and not just do them and become accustomed to this methodology. Many transfer students that we receive have not been taught the building blocks of alignment and technique. Our little students know what is expected of them in a dance class. They are taught in a nurturing way from the beginning how to follow dancer manners. They rise to the loving expectation of their teacher. This makes all of the difference in their training.

Many studios group large age groups of children together in the same classes. I’ve always recognized the differences in development between the ages of 3-8 years old and have avoided grouping these age groups together. Separating classes by age in the early years allows us to truly teach to the cognitive and physical development of the growing child. This allows us to utilize a student’s natural development in the way we teach so they can acquire motor, cognitive and social skills beneficial for later life roles, including that of a more advanced dancer. Ballet and tap are the most beneficial for the young dancer in building a foundation of body awareness, technique and rhythm in the young dancer.

6 year old combo classes: These classes meet once a week for one and a half hours. They will do ballet for one hour and tap for a half hour. Ballet class has the same structure as an advanced ballet class with a warm up/stretch, center barre work, center combinations, across the floor and ends with a creative movement activity and reverence. Because of student’s physical and cognitive development, students can work on a strong supporting leg, develop the use of rotation, proper posture/alignment and more advanced coordination and rhythm work. In tap students will learn a large vocabulary of steps, begin putting combinations of steps together with correct technical execution and rhythm mastery. The advanced open classes are for students who have mastered the previous year’s curriculum or are transfer students who have a high enough skill level.

New Mastery Binders

For all students ages 6 and older, we will be implementing a new mastery program. As my directors and I have been defining our beliefs about dance, my jazz director came up with the word mastery. We want our students to understand that we don’t come to class to “do” steps. We come to master every aspect of technique and classroom etiquette. Dance is all about building blocks. If you haven’t mastered principles and techniques and are just doing steps, you will hit a wall in your progress as a dancer. This year students will need to bring a 1 inch three binder to class beginning the 2nd week in September. Please get a good quality binder with a clear plastic cover. We will give them a cover sheet to decorate and put in their binder. They will be provided detailed mastery check lists for every genre they study at the studio. It will also include a goal sheet for the students and a place to write down skills to practice at home. This will give students a way to measure and track their progress and to receive individualized feedback. Students who master 80% of the skills will receive an invitation to a Lifehouse Swim Party in June.

Interested in more than one class at Lifehouse? The more classes you take the better the value! Tuition is based on a monthly fee and not a per class basis. Payment is the same no matter how many times your child attends class. If class has to be canceled due to bad weather or teacher illness, you will be notified and a makeup class scheduled. I ask that you only sign up for dance if you are committed to finish through the June recital. I believe in finishing what you start. A dancer must participate in the performances to receive the full benefit and reward of their dancing training. A student’s lack of commitment and follow through affects their entire class and inhibits the teacher’s ability to help their classes have a successful experience on the stage. If you are unable to finish the dance year through June, you must give written notification. For open classes, you will be responsible for tuition 30 days after the studio receives your written notification of withdrawal. For company students, you will be responsible for two months of tuition after the studio receives your written notification and your student stops attending class. Remember, costume and registration fees are non-refundable.
